Who is a candidate for nose reconstruction?

Severe nose deformity can occur due to multiple reasons like injury to the nose while playing sports or due to accidents, infections of the nose, autoimmune disorders leading to damage to the cartilage. As all the parts of the nose are severely deformed it is not possible to reconstruct the nose only with the septal cartilage. Large amount of cartilage graft maybe needed for this and rib cartilage might be needed. In rare cases even skin of the nose may be lost. In these patients flap surgeries are done to reconstruct the skin over the nose.

 

How is the nose reconstructed?

For correcting, supporting and augmenting the nose we need to analyse and treat each component of the nose including the skin, bone and cartilages. In cases of absence of shortage of the skin local tissue flaps are used. When there is severe shortage of cartilages then graft is harvested from the ribs. One single rib is taken from the chest and used for creating and supporting the various parts of the nose. Problems in the shape of the nasal bones is corrected with osteotomies and rearrangement of the bones give function and shape.

 

Is rib graft painful? Will it lead to future problems?
