FAQs

How is a functional rhinoplasty different from a septoplasty?

Most ENT surgeons also correct a deviated nasal septum with a procedure called as septoplasty. In a septoplasty the an incision is made on the inner part of the nose (called the nasal septum) and the part of septal cartilage which is causing narrowing of the inner nose is removed. However, after a septoplasty the asymmetry and curvature of the outer visible part of the nose is not corrected.

In contrast a functional septorhinoplasty not only corrects the blockage of the nose by removing the deviated or curved part of the nasal septum, this nasal cartilage is then used a grafts to straighten the outer visible part of the nose. This improves the breathing function of the nose it also corrects the cosmetic appearance of the nose and improves the facial aesthetics.

What is crooked nose deformity?

In cases of severe deviated nasal septum all the structures of the nose like the septum of the nose, the bones of the nose and the other cartilages providing shape to the nose are deformed. This leads to significant bend or twist on the leading to a C shape or S shape of the nose. This could be a result of any trauma over the nose, due to deviated septum or because of congenital origin.

Crooked nose can never be corrected with only septoplasty surgery. It would require correction of every individual structure of the nose including bones and the upper and lower lateral cartilages.

Which other problems can occur in the shape of the nose because deviated nasal septum?

Thee septum of the nose is the central part of the nose. Because of the deviation of the septum all the other parts of the nose also become asymmetrical. This leads to many problems like hollowing on one side of the nose, dorsal hump (elevated part of the nose), tip turned to one side, flattening of tip of the nose and asymmetrical nostrils. All these factors altogether lead to noticeable deformity which can make you self conscious.

This is the reason these patients undergo majority of revision rhinoplasty in Delhi. At Mirabilia plastic surgery our board certified plastic surgeons make sure that every step of the surgery is well planned and well executed.

Why revision rhinoplasty is a very complex surgery?

During the first surgery the extra nasal septal cartilage graft is removed and in most cases discarded without using them for grafts to correct the visible nose shape problems. So when you have to undergo a repeat surgery there is no source of graft in the nose. The only alternatives are the ear or the ribs in the chest. This leads to an extra scar. This is the reason you should make a wise and well thought decision to undergo rhinoplasty surgery in Delhi.
